Recently, the TV series Spinning Out has sparked everyone's interest in ice hockey. We interviewed
young hockey player Kenwrick Sze to learn about the ice hockey world and how he balances chasing
his dream while successfully continuing his studies. This confident and passionate athlete has grown
from a 3-year-old kid into a rising star on the Philippine national ice hockey team. Let’s see how good
education, parental support, and his full dedication led him to the top of ice hockey.
Kenwrick fell in love with ice hockey at age 3
His hockey journey began by chance at age 3 when he first saw players skating on the ice rink.
The sounds and speed fascinated energetic Kenwrick, and he instantly “got hooked.” He recalls,
“The players looked so cool, I wanted to be one of them right away.”
Ice hockey taught him inner qualities and social skills
With his parents’ support, Kenwrick has played hockey for over 10 years. Beyond physical training,
the sport helped him develop inner discipline and communication skills. He smiles, “Through hockey,
I learned teamwork and leadership. We felt like a big family on the ice, which is really precious.”
Balancing studies and hockey pressures
Like many students, Kenwrick has faced the challenge of managing academics alongside hockey.
He admits it’s stressful but credits athlete resilience and his mother’s understanding and support.
His mom helped him create a schedule that balances both. “Sometimes I skip tournaments for school,
sometimes I take days off classes to be at my best for big games," he says. He chose online school for
its flexible schedule, helping him juggle studies and training well.

Dreams and future: Between ice hockey and academics
Kenwrick’s future plans are full of hope and ambition. He aims to study in Australia while continuing his
hockey dream. “I want to learn there, join a team, represent the Philippines internationally, and strive to
be a national athlete,” he shares.
Earlier, Kenwrick led the Philippine national team to a gold medal at the 2023 IIHF World Championship,
earning praise from the Philippine president. Excelling in sports and studies, after finishing online high
school, he received offers from 5 prestigious universities, including the University of Toronto and the
University of British Columbia. Kenwrick’s story reminds us that chasing dreams wholeheartedly always
pays off.
